Earth Hour. People participate in this yearly event from all around the globe. I think it’s a beautiful thing for many reasons, including the silence and stillness that it brings.
To mark Earth Hour last night we went to bed early with the little ones and there were books by candle light. All the appliances were turned off and my husband even shut down our phones. The house was quieter, more relaxed. Everyone was asleep early, and honestly, I think everyone slept better. I would love to spend the last hour of every day technology free and reading by candle light.
Some of the candles we have in our house we have made ourselves using local beeswax. Candle making can be a tricky thing if you decide not to rely on artificial additives, GM (and mono cropped) soy or paraffin wax (which is derived from coal, petroleum or oil shale). I still haven’t quite got my head around the best way to do it without it cracking, but I think I am getting there slowly. I am aiming for a beeswax with olive oil addition so that all the materials can be sourced super locally.
Let me know if you have managed to work out a good recipe.
