Somehow the first month of this new year has come and almost gone. January started with a full moon and ends with a full moon this year, and it certainly is a magical month to be in the Barossa Valley. The farmers market is overflowing with gorgeous ripe stonefruit. Apricots have had a brilliant season which is only just rounding out now, peaches are just coming on, and plums, fat and juicy, are finding their way into preserves and jams, pies and streusel in kitchens all over the valley.
Lovely locals Olivia and Aaron delivered organic Satsumas, Damsens and Mariposa’s on the weekend so it is time for drying, stewing and preserving with Fowlers Vacola in my house.
And next weekend I have tomatoes ordered so then it will be more preserving and at least a batch of tomato sauce to see us through the rest of the year.
Every time we crack a bottle we say a little thank you to the summer Gods who helped provide this delicious bounty.
